St. Paul Academy 61
The Lake City Tigers let a victory slip from their grasp as they lost 61-57 in overtime to St. Paul Academy on Tuesday, January 27, 2004. The teams traded baskets throughout the first quarter as the score was knotted at 14 after one period of play. Both teams ignited their offense in the third quarter as Lake City put up 19 points and SPA tallied 22. Two free throws with no time on the clock gave the Tigers a 42-41 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The game went back and forth all through the 4th quarter. Lake City 40
Stewartville 58
The Lake City Tigers couldn’t match a taller and more physical Stewartville team, as they dropped a 58-40 decision on Friday, January 23, 2004. Things looked promising early for Lake City as they raced out to a 13-9 advantage at the end of one period of play. However, the offense disappeared in the second quarter, as Lake City netted a mere basket compared to the 16 points Stewartville posted in the quarter. This allowed Stewartville to jump out to a 25-15 halftime lead. It appeared the wheels were coming off of Lake City when Stewartville went on a 15-5 run to begin the second half. Stewartville appeared to take a commanding 40-20 advantage. Lake City answered back with a 14-0 run that extended into the first portion of the fourth quarter. Lake City was now trailing by 6 points with a little less than 6 minutes to play in the game. Twice Lake City had the ball down by 6 points, but couldn’t convert the opportunities. Any hope of victory by Lake City was snuffed out by an 11-2 run by Stewartville. The final margin was 18 points as Stewartville won, 58-40. Leading the Tiger attack was Mike Dick, who scored 12 points, all during the 14-0 run. Eric Gosse netted 8 points on the evening. Lake City was hurt by a poor rebounding performance as Stewartville held a commanding 31-20 rebounding edge for the game. Lake City drops to 5-9 with the loss on the season. The Tigers will look to bounce back on Tuesday, January 27, as they travel to St. Paul to take on St. Paul Academy.

Lake City 27
Byron 33
The slipper didn’t quite fit the Lake City Tigers on Tuesday, January 20 as they narrowly missed handing the Byron Bears loss number one on the season. A stretch of three costly turnovers cost the Tigers late in the game, as Byron won 33-27. Very little went right for Lake City in the opening minutes of the game, as Byron sewed together a 7-0 run to open the contest. The Tigers were able to settle down and hold the Bears scoreless the rest of the quarter. Lake City’s offense failed to click in the first quarter, as the Tigers only netted 3 points. Consequently Lake City trailed 7-3 after one period of play. The second quarter was even throughout, as both teams chalked up 10 points in the frame. Byron led 17-13 at halftime. Things looked to be slipping beyond Lake City’s reach in the third quarter as Byron opened up a 24-17 lead. The Tigers weren’t done yet however. They responded with an 8-0 to grab a 25-24 lead with 2:42 to play. Byron scored to take a one-point advantage. After three consecutive turnovers, Lake City was forced to foul. Byron put the game away with a 9-2 run after trailing by one point. The Tigers put the clamps on a high-powered Byron offense, which had been averaging nearly 60 points per game this season. Lake City had to rely on their defense as they shot a dismal 28% from the field. Alex Borgschatz led the Lake City output, pouring in 11 points. Ted Stam added 8. Lake City was marginally out rebounded by a significantly taller Bears team 23-21. Alex Borgschatz, Ted Stam, and Eric Gosse all hauled in 4 rebounds. Lake City will look to bounce back against another tall, physical team Friday, January 23, 2004 as they travel to Stewartville to take on the Tigers.

Rochester Lourdes 9 6 9 10 34
The Lake City Tigers extracted a sweet dollop of revenge Friday, January 16, 2004 as they defeated rival Rochester Lourdes 40-34. With the win, Lake City completed a rare program sweep of Lourdes at Alumni Hall. The game was even throughout the first quarter, however the Tigers netted the final four points to grab a 12-9 lead after one period of play. Lake City then went on a 7-1 run to grab a 9-point lead, which they held until halftime. The Tigers led 24-15 at the break. Lourdes opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run to pull within 2 points. This would be as close as the Eagles would come for the rest of the game. Lake City answered back on a 6-0 run and held a 30-24 advantage heading into the final period of play. The Tigers dictated the pace of play in the 4th quarter. Lake City converted defensive breakdowns by Lourdes into lay-ups. The Tigers held an 8-point advantage for much of the 4th quarter. The Eagles added a three pointer in the final seconds to account for the final score of 40-34. Lake City benefited from a hot shooting night, hitting 63% of their field goal attempts. The Tigers connected on 16 of 19 two-point attempts. Nolan Krause led the Tigers with 11 points. Quinn Sweeney scored 9 points in his first game back following a broken wrist injury. Lake City tallied 14 assists as a team, led by Alex Borgschatz, who dished out 7. Lake City improves to 5-7 overall and 3-3 in conference play. Winona Cotter 48
The Lake City Tigers clashed with the Winona Cotter Ramblers on Friday, January 9, 2004 for rights to the Skipper Cup. Lake City played well for one half, then showed signs of fatigue as the Ramblers took control and won the game 48-35. Both teams shot reasonably well to begin the game as Lake City clung to a 15-11 lead at the end of one period of play. After going up by 7 points, Lake City failed to build their lead. The Tigers did not score on four consecutive possessions. This allowed Cotter to cut into the Lake City lead. However, the Tigers still led, 23-20 at halftime. After scoring on their first possession of the second half, Lake City took a 25-20 lead. Cotter then went on a 10-0 run to take a 30-25 lead. A Cody Blair three pointer brought the Tigers within two. Cotter connected on two clutch shots late in the 3rd quarter to extend their lead to 35-28 heading into the final period of play. Cotter then scored the first seven points of the 4th quarter as their 12-0 scoring frenzy put the Tigers away. The Ramblers won by a score 48-35. Eric Gosse led Lake City with 11 points and 5 rebounds. Nolan Krause turned in a solid performance, netting 10 points and pulling down 6 rebounds. The Tigers held a 25-21 edge on the glass, but could not overcome the superior team speed of the Ramblers. Cotter used their speed to tally 15 points in transition, which proved costly to the Tigers. Lake City drops to 4-7 overall on the season and 2-3 in conference play. The Tigers will venture to Alumni Hall next Friday, January 16. Lake City will play rival Rochester Lourdes in a key conference game for both teams.

Lake City 47
Concordia Academy 53 (2 OT)
The Lake City Tigers failed to match their late game heroics from Tuesday as they dropped a 53-47 double overtime thriller to Concordia Academy on Thursday, January 8, 2004. The Tigers roared out to a hot start, but were matched by Concordia Academy as the Beacons answered from beyond the arc. However the Tigers still held a 17-13 advantage after one period of play. The score flopped sides throughout the 2nd quarter as both teams continued to connect on their shots. Ted Stam’s three pointer from the corner knotted the score at 31 heading into the break. Lake City had a offense lapse in the 3rd quarter as they only mustered 4 points. This allowed Concordia to grab a 39-35 lead heading into the final frame. Using their defensive pressure to take Concordia out of their offense, the Tigers tied the game at 42 and held for the final shot. A trey was off the mark from the corner as time expired, sending the game into overtime. The Tigers took a 44-42 lead on a lay up by Alex Borgschatz, but were unable to salt the game away. Again holding for the final shot, a three pointer came up short sending the game into a second extra period. Concordia jumped out to a quick three-point lead, which forced the Tigers to play catch up. Unable to score, Lake City was forced to foul, where Concordia put the game away at the free throw line. Ted Stam led the Tigers with 19 points. Sterling Malcomson and Nolan Krause each netted 8 points apiece. Krause added 7 rebounds to go along with his 8 points. Looking at the statistics, one would think the Lake City would have emerged the victor as they committed 9 turnovers compared to 17 for Concordia. The Tigers also held a 31-26 advantage on the glass, but they were unable to solve the Beacons on this night. Lake City drops to 4-6 overall on the season. The Tigers are back in action on Friday, January 9, 2004 as they play host to Winona Cotter for the Skippers Cup.
January 6, 2004
Lake City 11 4 11 16 42
Pine Island 11 12 8 8 39
The Lake City Tigers used a ferocious comeback and some last second heroics as they stunned the Pine Island Panthers 42-39 on Tuesday, January 6, 2004. The Tigers finally came out of the gate ready to play as they built an early lead. Pine Island used strong free throw shooting to tie the game at 11 after one period of play. Typical of how things have gone for the Tigers this year, Lake City struggled to muster an offensive attack in the 2nd quarter. It seemed as though a lid was over the basket, as the Tigers only managed 4 points in the frame. Pine Island drained some clutch shots to grasp a 23-15 halftime advantage over the Tigers. After a three point play by PI to begin the second half, the Tigers went on a 9-0 run to close the deficit to two points. Lake City was unable to capitalize on their shooting from the charity stripe, as Pine Island regained a 31-26 advantage heading into the final period. Pine Island broke down the Tigers defense to push their lead to 37-27. Lake City was game for the challenge as they answered with 10-2 run to close the gap to 39-37 with just 58 ticks remaining on the clock. Following a Pine Island turnover, Ted Stam hit two free throws to knot the game at 39. After hauling in a rebound on the other end, Lake City called time out to set up one final play. Eric Gosse provided the dagger as he canned a trey from the corner with a mere :03.2 seconds remaining in the contest. A half court heave was well wide by PI as time ran out. Lake City evens their conference record at 2-2 on the season, as well as improving to 4-5 overall. Ted Stam led the Tigers with 11 points. Eric Gosse netted 10 points. Nolan Krause provided a solid overall game notching 9 points and 8 rebounds. Lake City held a 26-21 edge on the glass over Pine Island, which was key in the victory. The Tigers return to action on Thursday, January 8 as they tangle with Concordia Academy of St. Paul at home. The following night, Lake City will play host to Winona Cotter on their home floor.
December 30, 2003
Lake City 6 4 5 23 38
Rochester Lourdes 11 7 14 10 42
The Lake City Tigers found themselves asking “what if?” after dropping a 42-38 decision to foe Rochester Lourdes Tuesday, December 30, 2003. The Tigers once again were sluggish to start the game and consequently dug themselves a 10-6 deficit after one period of play. Lake City failed to muster any potent offensive attack in the first half. The Tigers had numerous turnovers in the first half of play. Lourdes was able to knock down some shots from beyond the arc in the 2nd quarter, as well as some from the free throw line, stretching their lead to 18-10. Lourdes kept up the defensive pressure in the 3rd quarter, which frustrated the Tiger squad. Lake City netted a mere 5 points compared to the 14 Lourdes chalked up. Things were looking gloomy when the scoreboard showed Lourdes with a 32-15 advantage after three quarters. Lourdes hit a three pointer to stretch the lead to 20 points with a little over 7 minutes to play. The Tigers were down, but not out. Lake City rose to a new energy level to swing momentum back in its favor. Finally connecting on some of their field goal attempts, the Tigers went on a 17-0 tear to close the gap to 35-32. After a technical foul was called on Lourdes with 1:50 to play, Lake City received three free throw attempts. The Tigers converted only one of three attempts and failed to capitalize on the extra possession, as this turned out to be the turning point in the game. Lake City closed the gap to 39-38 after a Ted Stam trey with a little over one minute to play. Lourdes netted a lay up to push the lead back to three points. With time running out a Tiger three pointer from the corner caught nothing but air as Lourdes grabbed the ball and sealed the win. Ted Stam, who tossed in 13 points, led Lake City offensively. Nolan Krause turned in another solid performance, tallying 10 points and adding 7 rebounds. The Tigers dished out 13 assists as a team, led by Alex Borgschatz’s 5. Lake City falls to 3-5 on the year with the loss. The Tigers will look to build on the momentum gained in the 4th quarter as they head into 2004. A full slate of games is on for the first week of January, as Lake City opens a three game home stand against Pine Island on Tuesday, January 6, 2004. Concordia Academy will visit Lake City on Thursday the 8th, followed by a clash with Winona Cotter for the Skipper’s Cup on the 9th. All three games will be played in Lake City.

Lake City 8 4 6 6 24
Rushford-Peterson 16 6 8 5 35

The Trojans muscled their way to a 35-24 victory over Lake City in the semifinals of the Warrior Club Holiday Tournament. R-P rode hot shooting to begin the game, connecting three times from long distance. The Trojans used this to build a 16-8 lead over Lake City after one period of play. The R-P defense reeked havoc on Lake City, forcing the Tigers into 9 first half turnovers. Lake City had opportunities to cut into the R-P lead, but could not convert. The Tigers trailed at the half, 22-12. Two quick baskets by Lake City cut the lead to 6 points to open the third quarter, but R-P answered with an 8-0 run to push the lead back into double digits. The Trojans held a comfortable 30-18 lead heading into the final frame. Lake City wasn’t going to go down without a fight. The Tigers cut the lead to 8 with a little over four minutes to go. After a steal by the Tigers, typical of how the game went, Lake City turned the ball over. After three consecutive turnovers by the Tigers, R-P put the game away at the free throw line, winning 35-24. The Tigers struggled offensively all game, shooting only 29.7% from the field. Sterling Malcomson lead the Tigers with 8 points. Nolan Krause chipped in with 6 points. Lake City pulled down 28 rebounds, lead by Nolan Krause’s 8. Lake City slipped to 3-4 overall on the year with the loss. The Tigers will be back in action tomorrow, Tuesday, December 30. Minnehaha Academy 15 11 22 17 65
The Lake City Tigers found themselves out of their element as they dropped a pivotal non-conference showdown with Minnehaha Academy 65-39 Saturday, December 20, 2003. Lake City seemed as though they were in shock to begin the game, as Minnehaha used a quick start to grab an early 15-2 lead. The Tigers fought back with a 9-0 run to end the quarter. Sterling Malcomson capped off the quarter with three free throws after being fouled on a half court attempt. Lake City settled down in the second quarter and played the way they are capable of. The Tigers defense stiffened and created turnovers. After both teams posted 11 points in the second quarter, Minnehaha held a slim 26-22 lead at the break. A lay up by Sterling Malcomson brought Lake City within two points early in the third quarter. However this was the closest the Tigers would come the rest of the game as the Minnehaha offense went on an 18-0 scoring tear. The Tigers repeatedly committed turnovers during that span, leading to easy baskets for the Redhawks. Lake City faced a 48-31 deficit heading into the final frame. Things didn’t get much better in the fourth quarter as the Redhawks tossed in three consecutive treys, expanding the lead to 26 points. The final score was in Minnehaha Academy’s favor, 65-39. Minnehaha used its defense to force Lake City into a season high 25 turnovers. Lake City will use this game as a learning experience, as they were exposed to a different style of play exhibited in today’s game. Statistically Eric Gosse led the Lake City output. He played a solid overall game, netting 14 points, grabbing 7 rebounds and dishing out 4 assists. Sterling Malcomson and Cody Blair tallied 9 points each for the Tigers. Lake City will now receive a much-needed break to regroup. They will next take to the court in the Winona State Warrior Club Tournament. Triton held a 9-7 advantage after the first period of play. The lead flopped sides throughout the second quarter. Cannon Falls 13 18 17 18 66
The Lake City Tigers traveled to Cannon Falls Tuesday December 16 for a prominent HVL match up. After mounting a series of comebacks, it was too little too late as the Tigers bowed out 66-58. C-F came out shooting at a torrid clip from the field and used three first quarter three pointers to gain a 13-11 advantage after one period of play. The Bombers took advantage defensive breakdowns to build a 25-16 lead midway through the second quarter. Then, Lake City appeared to find a second wind, going on a 10-2 run to pull within one at 27-26. A late defensive lapse allowed C-F to tally 5 straight points before the intermission. The Tigers were extremely fortunate to be down by only five points based on their level of play in the first half. After allowing C-F to score the first two points of the third quarter, Lake City again closed the gap to one point thanks to consecutive three pointers by Sterling Malcomson. C-F then answered with two three pointers of their own, and soon stretched the lead back into double digits. Lake City trailed 48-37 entering the final period of play. Needing to make up the difference, the Tigers switched to a heavy pressure defense hoping to cause Bomber turnovers. Cannon Falls was able to maintain their lead thanks to some critical jump shots.
