Tigers Lose Heartbreaker in Overtime

by Quinn Sweeney

WINONA, Minn.—The Spring Grove Lions snatched a victory from the jaws of defeat on Dec. 28 as they defeated the Lake City Tigers 61-56 in an overtime thriller to capture the Winona State Holiday Tournament championship. The Tigers (2-4) started the game strong as they opened up a 9-2 lead early in the ball game. Nick Moyer came out of the gates hot from the field as he knocked down his first four shots. A three-point basket from James Schmidt gave the Tigers their biggest lead of the first half, 18-8. Garrett Cross nailed two treys and a lay-up by Andy Folz allowed the Lions (3-3) to close within two. A lay-up by Alex Wallerich with time winding down in the half gave the Tigers a 22-18 lead at intermission. The Lions used a 12-4 run to open the second half to snatch their first lead of the game. Moyer and the Tigers answered back with a 12-1 run to regain the lead. Moyer scored seven straight points during this stretch. “Moyer was in the zone, as he scored a career-high 29 points from all over the floor,” said coach Shawn Sweeney. Once again, the Lions roared back and scored 11 consecutive points to take a four point lead with five minutes remaining. Moyer connected on his second three-pointer of the ball game to knot the score at 44 with 3:40 remaining in the game. Cross drove the lane and hit a shot to give the Lions a two point lead, but Matt Fick knocked down two free throws to tie the game on the next possession for the Tigers. The defense held, and Moyer canned his third trey of the game from the corner to give Lake City a 49-46 lead with two minutes left. Adel Hundorf then hit a three pointer on the next possession for the Lions. After the teams exchanged baskets, Lake City held for one final shot. Indy Liljevall found a wide open Fick who converted a lay-up to give the Tigers a two point lead with 6.4 seconds remaining. With fouls to give, the Tigers elected the foul the Lions twice as they brought the ball up the court. With 2.7 seconds remaining the Lions in-bounded from half court. Kevin Lochner received the ball took one dribble and drilled an 18 foot jumper to send the game into overtime. In overtime, the Tigers scored first as Moyer hit one of two free throws with 2:53 remaining. Lochner scored for the Lions to give them a one point lead. Liljevall put back a Moyer miss and was fouled with 2:23 to play. The ensuing free throw was missed and the ball went out of bounds to the Lions. On the Lions’ next possession, Jesse Kruk converted one of two free throws to tie the game once again. Holding for one shot, the Tigers turned the ball over and Dakotah Rostad buried his second long ball of the game to give the Lions a three point advantage with 42 seconds to play. On the ensuing possession, the Tigers turned the ball over once again and were forced to foul. Lochner missed the front end of the one-and-one and gave the Tigers one last chance. A three-pointer by Moyer rattled in and out and the Tigers fouled with 1.9 seconds remaining. Cross then hit both free throws to put the game out of each. “I was pleased with the progress our team made in the tournament,” said Sweeney. Moyer carried the Tigers with 29 points and 11 rebounds. Fick added 11 points and six rebounds. Jordan Schumacher had five assists on the evening. Lochner led the Lions with 21 points and seven rebounds. Cross had 14 points and five assists. The Tigers had a 36-19 edge on the glass, but committed 16 turnovers, compared to only seven for the Lions. Next up for the Tigers is a return trip to Winona, this time to play the HVL Gold Division leader Winona Cotter Ramblers on Friday, Jan. 5. “We will need to take better care of the ball against a very quick Winona Cotter team,” Sweeney said.

Tigers Open Holiday Tournament With a Win

by Quinn Sweeney

WINONA, Minn.—The Lake City Tigers won their second game in a row, defeating Mabel-Canton 51-42 in the opening round of the Winona State Holiday Tournament. The Tigers (2-3) started out slow, as the Cougars (3-3) scored the first four points of the game. Lake City answered back with an 11-4 run. The game stayed close throughout the first half as neither team led by more than five points until the final seconds when Matt Fick’s basket gave the Tigers a 26-20 lead. Fick scored eight of his season-high 14 points in the first half. The Tigers started strong in the second half, but the Cougars countered to close within three. From there the Tigers opened up multiple nine point leads, which was the largest of the game for either team. The Cougars closed within five points with a little over three minutes to play but the Tigers, despite shooting just 13 for 26 at the free throw line, made just enough shots from the charity stripe to win in the closing minutes. Lake City was led by Fick and Nick Moyer, as both scored 14 points. Fick grabbed eight rebounds, while Moyer grabbed six. Joe Klennert added four points and had eight rebounds for the Tigers. Coach Shawn Sweeney was pleased with the efforts of Fick, who was cast into the starting line-up replacing Josh Roach. Roach missed the tournament due to illness. “I thought Matt turned in a solid performance on both ends of the floor,” said Sweeney. Mabel-Canton’s leading scorer Quinton Sand came into the contest averaging just under 22 points per game. The defense of the Tigers and specifically Indy Liljevall limited Sand to just two first half points. He finished with 15 points in the game. “Indy accepted the challenge of denying Sand the ball and was relentless in his defense throughout the game,” added Sweeney. The Tigers out rebounded the Cougars 33-22.

Cougars Hold Off Tigers

by Quinn Sweeney

MAZEPPA, Minn.—The Zumbrota-Mazeppa Cougars handed the Lake City Tigers their third consecutive loss to open the season by a score of 59-53 on Tuesday evening. Sloppy play plagued both teams to open the game. The Tigers (0-2, 0-3) took an 8-4 advantage before the Cougars (1-1, 2-2) began a three point brigade. Mike Richardson connected on four of five three-point goals to help the Cougars open up an eight point lead in the final minutes of the half. Baskets by Josh Roach and Matt Fick late in the half sliced the Cougar lead to 26-22 at intermission. The Tigers came out hot in the second half. After the Cougars opened the scoring, the Tigers went on a 7-0 scoring run that included three-point baskets from Nate Bunkowske and Jordan Schumacher. Schumacher’s three gave the Tigers their last lead of the ballgame, 29-28. Mike Kruse scored six of eight points in an 8-2 Cougars run that gave them the lead for good. The Cougars tied their largest lead in the ball game in the second half when they led 47-39. The Tigers didn’t go away softly. Two three-pointers from Nick Moyer and another from Bunkowske pulled the Tigers within five. A turning point in the game came with 4:01 remaining when Moyer, who led the Tigers with 15 points, stole the ball near mid-court. He then drove the lane and was called for his fifth and disqualifying foul. Bunkowske pulled the Tigers within one point with one minute to play after he collected a loose ball rebound off a missed free-throw by Schumacher. Andy Wendroth answered for the Cougars on the other end. Wendroth was left open along the right baseline and drained the 15 foot shot to push the lead back to three points. The Tigers turned the ball over on the ensuing possession and Wendroth hit three of four free throw attempts to ice the game. Kruse led the Cougars with 13 points and five rebounds. Richardson had 12 points, all of them coming in the first half. Moyer scored 15 points and collected four rebounds before fouling out for the Tigers. Bunkowske chipped in with 13 points including three treys. Roach added 12 points for the Tigers.

Panthers Topple Tigers in HVL Opener

by Quinn Sweeney

LAKE CITY, Minn.—The Pine Island Panthers defeated the Lake City Tigers 55-45 in the conference opener for both teams on Dec. 8. After exchanging baskets early in the early stages of the game, the Panthers (2-0, 1-0) went on an 8-0 run to take a 12-4 advantage with 10:50 remaining in the first half. The Tigers (0-2, 0-1) closed the gap to four points late in the half thanks in part to an 8-2 run which included a three-point play from Ben Krehbiel and a three-point basket from Nick Moyer. The Panthers scored the last bucket of the first half to take a 23-17 lead at halftime. In the second half, the Tigers once again found themselves playing catch-up. The Panthers connected on their first four field goal attempts of the second half to open up a 12 point lead, their largest of the game. Sophomore Austin Gilles came off the bench in the second half and scored four quick points to pull the Tigers within five. However, the Panthers had an answer for every charge the Tigers made. Jake Gabor helped push the lead back into double digits for the Panthers in the later stages of the game. Gabor scored 10 of his game-high 15 points in the second half and also snatched 10 of his game-high 12 rebounds in the half. Lake City was led offensively by Josh Roach and Moyer, who each scored 12 points. Jordan Schumacher chipped in with seven points. The Panthers enjoyed a 43-29 edge in the rebounding department, many of which included numerous second chance opportunities. “We showed improvement from our first game but need to eliminate unforced errors and rebound better in order to compete,” stated Tigers coach Shawn Sweeney following the completion of this HVL Blue Division contest.
